Local & National News | August 22, 2023
Discover Karen Camper's vision for the Memphis Latino community as she runs for Mayor, aiming to collaborate with leaders and non-profits to create a more inclusive and prosperous future for all citizens.

As a candidate for Mayor of Memphis, I am committed to working with all communities in our city to create a brighter future. The Latino community in Memphis has been growing, with an estimated 27,429 Latino workers contributing to our city's economy. As of 2020, 7.36% of the people in Memphis are Hispanic, totaling 47.9k people. The needs of the Latino community in Memphis include access to healthcare, education, job opportunities, and resources for self-sufficiency. Organizations like Latino Memphis have been working to address these needs by providing services and building partnerships with over 50 agencies.

If elected, my administration will collaborate with Latino leaders and non-profits dedicated to serving the Latino population to pursue prosperity, citizenship, and obtain resources for education and healthcare that they are currently not receiving from local government. I believe that a city with successful immigrants woven into the fabric of society is not only an economic imperative but also a moral one.

I am excited about the possibility of leading Memphis into a new era where all citizens are united in creating better tomorrows. I am grateful for the thousands of immigrants who have chosen to make Memphis their home and believe that together, we can forge a new future where they are respected, valued, and have the opportunity to realize their dreams in Bluff City.

To address the needs of the Latino community, my administration will work closely with organizations like Latino Memphis, which focuses on improving education opportunities, stimulating economic development, promoting empowerment, and enhancing cross-cultural collaboration and celebration. Additionally, we will collaborate with other organizations that serve the Latino community, such as the Immigrant Rights Defense Center of Latino Memphis and Multinational Memphis, to provide comprehensive support and resources.

In summary, my vision for the Latino community in Memphis involves collaboration with Latino leaders and non-profits to address their needs and ensure they have access to resources for education, healthcare, and self-sufficiency. By working together, I believe that our city can create a more inclusive and prosperous future for all its citizens.
