Memphis doesn't just eat. Memphis testifies.

You hear it in the way a regular describes the rib tips at Cozy Corner like they're describing a family member. You hear it when someone says "The Four Way" and drops their voice half a register out of respect, because they know they're not just naming a restaurant — they're naming 1946, and everything this city has survived and celebrated since. You hear it in the sizzle at a Beale Street window, in the way a Sunday brunch conversation slows all the way down over a plate of toast in Uptown, in the bass rattling out of a bar on Quince Road where the wings are just as loud as the DJ.

That's the sound Taste of Memphis: Black Dining Week is built to amplify.

Starting today, September 6th, and running through September 12th, 2026, Memphis is once again turning its whole city into a table. Seventeen Black-owned restaurants — and counting — have opened their doors, built out special menus, and invited every single person in this city to come taste what makes Memphis Memphis. This isn't a food festival that happens near the community. It is the community, plated up and passed around one table at a time.

And this year, JustMy is proud to be part of the celebration — not as a vendor, not as a sponsor looking for a logo placement, but as a neighbor showing up the way we believe every local business and every local platform should show up: in service of the people already doing the work.

More Than a Restaurant Week

Here's the thing people get wrong about events like this. They hear "restaurant week" and they think discount menus and gift certificates. That's not what's happening here.

The organizers behind Taste of Memphis say it best: "This isn't just Restaurant Week. It's community. It's economic development. It's Memphis."

That distinction matters. When you eat at a Black-owned restaurant during Black Dining Week, your money isn't just buying a meal — it's buying into a decade-plus tradition of Memphis diners intentionally investing in the businesses that keep this city's culture alive. Taste of Memphis picked up that torch after the original Memphis Black Restaurant Week's founder stepped back, and they picked it up with the founder's blessing, because the mission was too important to let quietly fade. The goal was never to fill tables for seven days and call it a win. The goal is to put a new customer in the seat of a Black-owned restaurant, have that customer fall in love with the food, and have them come back in October. And November. And next year.

That's economic development that doesn't need a press conference. It just needs you to show up hungry.

The Flavor Is the Whole Point

Let's talk about what's actually on the table, because Memphis did not come to play this year.

You want soul food that tastes like it was made by somebody's grandmother because it basically was? The Four Way has been serving this community since 1946 out on Mississippi Blvd — it is, without exaggeration, a Memphis landmark. Kountry Cookin' on Winchester is open all seven days a week for the kind of hearty, home-cooked Southern plates that don't need a menu description, just a fork.

Want your barbecue slow-smoked and unhurried? A&R BBQ in Hickory Hill and Cozy Corner BBQ off North Parkway have both been building Memphis's smoke-and-sauce reputation for decades. This is the barbecue that built the city's culinary identity in the first place.

Craving something a little more upscale, a little more "let's dress up for this"? Downtown and Midtown are stacked. One 11 Madison, Sage Restaurant on South Main, Esco Restaurant and Tapas in the heart of the Beale Street Entertainment District, The Genre, and Cache42 Downtown are all serving elevated plates with Memphis soul underneath the technique. Over on Quince and Mendenhall, SERV Restaurant and Bar and SALT are bringing craft cocktails, live DJ energy, and the kind of "vibe dining" that turns a Tuesday into an occasion.

Want to travel without leaving the city? Curry N' Jerk downtown is blending bold jerk spices with rich curry traditions for a Caribbean flavor profile Memphis doesn't get nearly enough credit for having.

Morning person? Memphis Toast and Eggxactly have brunch and breakfast covered with a Southern, eclectic twist that makes "I'll just grab coffee" impossible once you see the menu.

And — full transparency, because we're not going to bury our own — PizzaMe! out on Kirby Road is on the list too. Bold, gourmet pies with an urban twist, a signature "Hood Sauce" the regulars already swear by, and a Veggie Pizza built on a cauliflower crust for anyone keeping it lighter. It's proof that Black Dining Week isn't one cuisine or one neighborhood. It's the whole city, every corner, every flavor.

That's 17 restaurants. Soul food. BBQ. Caribbean. Pizza. Breakfast and brunch. Upscale American. Casual and loud. Quiet and intentional. Downtown, Midtown, Hickory Hill, and everywhere between. There is not one lane in Memphis dining that Black-owned restaurants aren't already dominating — Black Dining Week just makes sure you know where to find all of them at once.

The Vibe

Ask anybody who's done Black Dining Week before and they won't describe it like an itinerary. They'll describe it like a mood.

It's the group chat that starts on September 1st with "okay where are we starting this year." It's the couple who tries a new spot every night just to see who can post the best plate. It's the coworkers who turn lunch into a scavenger hunt across the directory. It's the grandmother who's been going to The Four Way since before some of these newer spots even had a building, standing in line next to a 24-year-old discovering it for the very first time.

It's a week where showing up to eat is itself a form of civic pride. Where "support local" stops being a bumper sticker and starts being your Tuesday night plans. Where the culture isn't something you read about — it's something you taste, table by table, plate by plate, restaurant by restaurant, until the whole city has quietly voted with its stomach on who deserves a packed dining room.

That's the energy Taste of Memphis is built to protect: "Eat Good. Support Local. Keep the Culture Going."
