Today marks the somber anniversary of Cameron William Selmon's untimely passing, a vibrant young life cut short by senseless gun violence on October 22, 2015. As we remember Cameron, we are reminded of the urgent need to address the epidemic of gun violence that continues to shatter dreams and tear families apart.

A Life Full of Promise

Cameron was born on September 14, 1996, bringing joy to his mother Stacie and his two proud fathers, Marvin Selmon and Bryan Payne Sr. From an early age, Cameron showed immense potential. He excelled academically, winning first place in his school's Science Fair and consistently earning top grades. His talents extended beyond the classroom, as he shone on the football field and in the school choir, even traveling to Hawaii for performances.

With his infectious smile and kind heart, Cameron touched the lives of everyone he met. He was known for his unique style, his hilarious dance moves, and his willingness to help others. After graduating from Southwind High School in 2014, Cameron had dreams of becoming a dentist, aspiring to create beautiful smiles like his own.

A Dream Shattered

Tragically, Cameron's aspirations were cut short on that fateful day in October 2015. Like so many other victims of gun violence, his potential was stolen in an instant, leaving behind a grieving family and community.

Turning Pain into Purpose

In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, Cameron's family chose to honor his memory by establishing the Justice for Cameron Incorporated (J4CC) nonprofit organization. Through this initiative, they have awarded over $44,000 in scholarships to deserving students, helping other young people achieve the dreams that Cameron was denied.

The Cameron William Selmon Scholarship

Today, on the anniversary of Cameron's passing, we highlight the scholarship that bears his name. This opportunity is open to high school seniors in Shelby County, Tennessee, with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Applicants are asked to share their thoughts on gun violence and how they can become champions against it.

A Call to Action

Cameron's story is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on families and communities. It's a tragedy that has become all too common, with nearly 1 in 5 adults in the United States having lost a family member to gun violence.

We must ask ourselves: How many more dreams will be shattered before we take meaningful action? How many more families will be torn apart?
