For six decades, the Toyota Corolla has been the kind of car people remember.

It was the dependable first car. The commuter that showed up every morning. The gas-saver that helped a family stretch its budget. The vehicle handed from one generation to the next because it still had plenty of life left in it.

Now Toyota is celebrating that history with the 2027 Toyota Corolla 60th Anniversary Special Edition—a limited-run hybrid sedan that brings a little more style and exclusivity to one of the most familiar names on Memphis roads.

Only 2,500 of the anniversary models will be offered in the United States. Toyota says they will arrive in early 2027, following the regular 2027 Corolla lineup, which is expected to begin reaching dealerships this fall. Pricing for the special edition has not been announced yet.

The Corolla Gets Some Birthday Swagger

The Corolla name first arrived in Japan in 1966. Sixty years later, Toyota is celebrating the milestone with a special edition based on the sporty Corolla Hybrid SE.

This is not a stripped-down economy-car tribute with a sticker package. Toyota is giving the anniversary Corolla a few details designed to help it stand apart in a parking lot full of standard compact sedans.

The 60th Anniversary Special Edition includes:

• Exclusive 18-inch machined alloy wheels with black finishes.

• Unique exterior 60th Anniversary badging in place of the normal SE badge.

• Black-and-red sport-fabric seat inserts.

• Anniversary door-sill plates.

• Anniversary floor mats.

• A standard 10.5-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen.

• A choice of Ice Cap white or Supersonic Red, with the red paint exclusive to the anniversary model.pressroom.

The best part is that Toyota did not just put “60th Anniversary” badges on a basic Corolla LE. It built this edition from the Hybrid SE, the trim that already gives the Corolla a more athletic attitude with a sportier front end, gloss-black mesh grille and rear diffuser.

For drivers who want a sensible car without driving something that feels anonymous, that matters.

A Memphis-Friendly Hybrid

Let’s be honest: in Memphis, a vehicle’s personality is important—but so is the price at the pump.

The 2027 Corolla Hybrid uses Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system, combining a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. Toyota rates the Hybrid LE and Hybrid XLE at up to 53 mpg city, 46 mpg highway and 50 mpg combined in front-wheel-drive form.

The anniversary edition is based on the Hybrid SE. Toyota has not released a separate official fuel-economy rating for the special edition, so buyers should wait for final EPA information rather than assume it will match every other Corolla Hybrid trim exactly.

Still, the idea is clear: this is a limited-edition car that should still do what the Corolla has always done well—help drivers spend less time and money at the gas station.

That could make it appealing for a Memphis commuter running up and down I-240, a University of Memphis student looking for a reliable first new car, or a family adding an efficient daily driver to the driveway.

The Regular 2027 Corolla Still Covers the Basics

Not everybody will get one of the 2,500 anniversary cars. Toyota knows that. The broader 2027 Corolla lineup remains built around choice.

Gas-powered Corollas come in LE, SE and XSE grades. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder producing 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Toyota estimates the Corolla LE will deliver 32 mpg in the city, 41 mpg on the highway and 35 mpg combined.

The hybrid lineup includes Hybrid LE, Hybrid SE, Hybrid XLE and the 60th Anniversary Special Edition. The Hybrid LE and Hybrid SE are also available with Toyota’s Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive system for drivers who want extra traction.

Toyota lists the 2027 Corolla LE with a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $23,325, excluding the $1,295 dealer processing and handling charge. The Hybrid LE starts at $25,175, while the Hybrid SE begins at $27,615 before that charge. The anniversary edition’s price will be announced closer to its launch.

Technology That Makes Sense

The Corolla’s appeal has always been practical, but Toyota has made sure the 2027 version does not feel stuck in the past.
