A Lifetime of Community Commitment in the Mid-South
July 15, 2026
Learn about Thomas Lannan’s decades of deep civic involvement and community dedication to Shelby County and the broader Mid-South region.

While executive management experience and data proficiency are vital qualifications for Shelby County Property Assessor, there is another, equally important requirement: a genuine, deep-seated love for this community.

To lead an agency that directly impacts the local economy and the personal wealth of our citizens, a leader must understand the heartbeat of the region. They must know the neighborhoods, the families, the businesses, and the challenges we face.

For Thomas Lannan, the Mid-South isn’t just a spot on a map—it is the place he chose to build his life, raise his family, and serve his neighbors for more than 30 years.

"Leadership isn't just about what you do in an office. It is about how you show up for your neighbors when the cameras are off and there are no votes on the line."
— Thomas Lannan

Choosing the Mid-South

Tom grew up in Indianapolis as one of six children, learning early on the values of hard work, family, and shared responsibility. After earning his degree from Indiana University, his professional journey led him to the Memphis area when he was recruited by the Schering-Plough corporation.

Though his career briefly called him to other regions, the unique spirit, warmth, and culture of the Mid-South brought him back. He married Kathy, a Memphis native, and together they made Shelby County their permanent home over three decades ago. Here, they raised their two children, Patrick and Lauren, and have built a beautiful 36-year marriage rooted in faith, family, and community service.

Decades of Active Civic Leadership

Tom’s commitment to Shelby County is demonstrated by his extensive, decades-long history of volunteerism. He has never been a passive observer; instead, he roll up his sleeves and takes on active leadership roles in the civic organizations that keep our community strong:

Bridging Business and Community

Tom’s civic involvement bridges the gap between public service and economic vitality. He has served as a board member and ambassador for the Collierville Chamber of Commerce, an ambassador with the Germantown Chamber of Commerce, and a volunteer ambassador for the iconic AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

Through these roles, Tom has spent decades listening to the concerns of local business owners, understanding their operational challenges, and working to foster a thriving, pro-growth environment throughout Shelby County.

A Leader Who Answers to You

Tom’s deep roots in Shelby County mean he is not beholden to political bosses or special interest groups. His only obligation is to the neighbors, friends, and community members he has worked alongside for the past thirty years.

When you vote for Thomas Lannan, you are voting for a neighbor who has spent a lifetime investing in the prosperity, culture, and well-being of the Mid-South. He is ready to bring that same lifetime of devotion to the Shelby County Assessor’s Office.
