From South Memphis roots to Georgetown Law, discover how Judge Lonnie Thompson’s journey of music, faith, and justice prepares him to serve on day one.

In the complex world of the legal system, the Chancery Court often serves as the "court of conscience." It handles matters of equity—complex contract disputes, real estate litigation, and the sensitive details of family law. For the citizens of Shelby County, this court requires a leader who possesses a deep understanding of the law and a heart for the community.

Judge Lonnie Thompson is that leader, and his journey to the bench is as unique as the court itself.

A Foundation of Hard Work and Harmony

Born to a single mother in an impoverished neighborhood in South Memphis, Lonnie Thompson’s early world was shaped by the values of hard work and the discipline of music. He attended Memphis City Schools with a dream far removed from the courtroom: he wanted to be a concert pianist.

His talent was undeniable, eventually earning him a scholarship to the prestigious Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. It was there, during a student protest against South African apartheid, that his path shifted. Seeing the power of advocacy and the necessity of justice, Thompson realized he could serve his community even more deeply through the law. He traded the piano bench for the judicial bench, eventually graduating from Georgetown Law School and returning home to serve the city that raised him.

Experience That Matters

Judge Thompson isn't just running on a platform; he is running on a decades-long record of service. Before his 28-year tenure as a General Sessions Judge, he served as a legislative assistant on Capitol Hill, a federal law clerk, and an Assistant City Attorney.

"I think the court system should be accessible," Thompson says. "For many citizens, the court is where they have their first impression of justice. We have to make it efficient, transparent, and fair."

He still "tickles the ivories" every Sunday, playing the organ for a local Memphis church—a reminder that he remains grounded in the community he serves.

Why Day One Matters

The Chancery Court handles cases that impact the very fabric of our local economy and our families. A backlog in this court is a delay in justice for small business owners and parents alike. Lonnie Thompson is prepared to step onto the bench on day one because he has spent years understanding the "nuts and bolts" of the Shelby County legal landscape.

He is also a pioneer in modernization. By integrating advanced tools like AskSKY!™ into his campaign, he is already demonstrating his commitment to ensuring every voter has their questions answered and their voices heard. He is providing a "digital heartbeat" for his run, proving that a court of conscience can also be a court of innovation.

As we look toward the August election, Shelby County needs battle-tested leadership. We need a Chancellor who values accountability, efficiency, and service. Judge Lonnie Thompson has spent his life preparing to serve.
