Better Future: Automating Compassion to Protect Our Seniors' Legacies
Meet The Candidates | April 30, 2026
Michael Whaley explains his plan to remove the barriers keeping seniors from the tax relief they’ve earned to keep them in their homes.

Your home is more than four walls and a roof; it is your sanctuary, your history, and for many in Shelby County, it is the primary asset of your legacy. During my time as County Commissioner, I was proud to sponsor the effort to expand tax relief for our seniors, veterans, and disabled residents. But I quickly realized that passing a policy is only half the battle—we have to make sure the help actually reaches the front door.

I have met too many seniors who have worked hard their entire lives, only to feel pushed out of their own neighborhoods by rising costs. They’ve paid into the system for decades. They shouldn't have to jump through hoops and navigate a maze of bureaucracy just to stay in the homes they own.

Removing the Barriers

A "Better Future" means a government that works for you, not against you. Right now, the process for accessing tax relief is far too manual and burdensome. We ask our seniors—some of our most vulnerable citizens—to navigate complex forms and deadlines during a time when they should be enjoying the fruits of their labor.

As Trustee, I’m going to roll up my sleeves and modernize this office. My goal is simple: Automate the process. We have the data. We have the technology. There is no reason we can't proactively identify those eligible for relief and make the process seamless.

Protecting the Neighborhood Fabric

When a senior is forced to leave their home because of a tax burden they can't manage, we lose more than a resident—we lose the "glue" of that neighborhood. We lose the institutional knowledge and the stability that long-term homeowners provide.

By making it easier to access tax relief, we aren't just doing "finance"—we are doing community service. We are helping people "hope again" by showing them that their government values their contribution and is committed to protecting their place in our city. As your Trustee, I will be a fierce advocate for our seniors, ensuring that "home" always stays "home."
