My name is Cartavius Black, and I’m running to be your County Commissioner for District 7. I have lived in the Memphis area for almost my entire life. As a resident of District 7, teacher, and future husband and father, my number 1 commitment is to ensure that this district, city, and county flourish for the generations that follow. 

I’ve had a plethora of occupations, all of which have taught me the importance of GRIT to families all over Memphis. My first job was as the oldest son to a single mother of two. My mom taught me early on the importance of education and how we could use it alongside a good work ethic to lift ourselves out of poverty. I chopped vegetables for $7.25/hr as a 14 year old to help my mom out with the bills.That and other service-oriented employment taught me early on that despite our diverse backgrounds, most families are inherently filled with good people. Twelve months at a mortgage company after college taught me that despite our station in life, we all want the stability and comfort that comes with a home. 

All that said, the vast majority of my adult life has been as a teacher in Memphis. My time as a teacher has taught me one thing: when driven by hope and those that believe in them, our city's youth can rise to any expectation. I am highly motivated to bring about much-needed change to Memphis and Shelby county, starting squarely with the education of our youth.

The problems our community faces can be boiled down to 3 major issues. We must provide access to education for all students, rebuild community systems to address community needs, and invest in economic development opportunities. If these issues are addressed with fidelity, we the people will shift the tone around living and working in District 7 of Shelby County, Tennessee. We will pave the way for our youth to have safe, healthy, and prosperous lives in the district that we love. 

All that being said, true grassroots movements are fueled by the people. That’s why I ask you to join me on this journey!
